Members of the IAS erupt into a resounding ovation in tribute to the lifesaving support Scientology Volunteer Ministers delivered over the past year.
A traditional highlight of the annual Anniversary Event is the awarding of the prestigious IAS Freedom Medal, underscoring the evening’s theme of relentless devotion toward the achievement of social justice, decency, morality and a drug-free existence across the planet. Mr. Miscavige introduced each of the recipients, unveiling personal stories of their unflinching commitment to humanity.
Giovanni Citterio, Milan, Italy: As a young addict, Giovanni’s life was saved when he found Narconon, the drug rehabilitation program based on the discoveries and writings of L. Ron Hubbard. Thereafter, he dedicated his life to saving others, establishing Narconon centers all across Italy. Now serving as Executive Director for South Europe, his 40 years as a drug rehab pioneer justly earned him the title Narconon Legend. “Narconon is the solution for the future of Mankind, which is falling into a chasm, where new drugs with their destructive effects blind young people, trapping them in a vicious circle. Vincenza Palmieri, Rome, Italy: Vincenza faced down psychiatry, taking a case all the way to Italy’s Supreme Court in the name of protecting children and families from abuse. She then exposed a coercive “Psychiatric Supply Chain” in a bestselling book, uncovering a vicious “kickback scheme” orchestrated by psychiatrists. And as the ultimate solution, she created a new profession, the Family Specialist, now recognized by the Italian government and today empowering families without medication or psychiatry. “The honor of being a Freedom Medal Winner coupled with what this medal represents—the possibility and hope of freedom for millions of children in Italy and around the world—is infinite. I dedicate this medal to each one of them, to their families and to those who, every minute, bravely fight the psychiatric supply chain.”
Antónia and Ferenc Novák, Budapest, Hungary: This couple embraced L. Ron Hubbard’s The Way to Happiness to combat rampant school bullying, launching a nationwide contest inviting children of all ages to create art projects featuring the book’s 21 moral precepts. While to extend their reach further still, Antónia and Ferenc created an online teachers’ platform called Cool School. All combined, they have introduced The Way to Happiness to students in nearly a third of all Hungarian schools, with incidents of youth violence plummeting by 60 percent. “Our infinite gratitude to LRH for The Way to Happiness, a gift to Mankind. The 21 precepts are a treasure that restores brotherhood, self-respect and honor. A gift with the power to bring a civilization back to life!”
Bringing an incomparable celebration of a milestone year and four unparalleled decades to a crescendo, Mr. Miscavige casts the audience’s sights onto a limitless future.
“Of course, when it comes to Scientology, the biggest challenge isn’t just communicating its scope, it’s also conveying its many dimensions,” said Mr. Miscavige. “Scientology is a religion, a Technology, a worldwide network of Churches and facilities, a global humanitarian movement and a diverse community of people spanning six continents. And so, our next message to the world out there is not just one but, in fact, three messages. Three power messages that build on each other.”
“Because we’ve never taken our eye off the ultimate prize, we stand where we are today,” Mr. Miscavige tells the crowd. “Forty years of magnificent accomplishment. And, more than that, a future more glorious than we could have ever imagined.”

Mr. Miscavige begins the 2024 Patrons Ball with these words to the Patrons of the IAS: “This is the night that crowns our 40th Anniversary of the IAS. And, yes, an evening belonging to you—and you alone.”
